“The Rise of Noncredit Workforce Education”
By: Michelle Van Noy, James Jacobs, Suzanne Korey, Thomas Bailey, & Katherine L. Hughes  (April/May 2008)

At many community colleges, noncredit education enrolls more students than do credit programs. Courses connected with workforce instruction and contract training account for much of the recent growth in noncredit education at community colleges. This article highlights CCRC's national study on the increasing importance of noncredit workforce education.

The Landscape of Noncredit Workforce Education:
State Policies and Community College Practices”

I thought that many of you in contract education and noncredit areas of our colleges would find one of the latest reports from the Community College Research Center of interest. They examined policies in all 50 states and looked at 20 colleges in 10 states, including California, for policies, practices and funding implications of not-for-credit and what we call noncredit education. (Most of the other states call what we call not-for-credit- “noncredit” FYI). City College of San Francisco and North Orange County CCD were included in their case studies for their noncredit approaches. Those using contract education as a part of their strategies to support local and regional labor market needs will find lots of great information and practices from throughout the country. The direct link to the PDF file: http://ccrc.tc.columbia.edu/Publication.asp?UID=572

A quote from the summary: “Noncredit workforce education can play an important role in responding to local labor market demands, while also connecting students to long-term educational opportunities and documenting outcomes in a meaningful way.”
