Position Summary

This position with a majority of the assignment in the Division of Business and Service Careers will teach a full range of Cosmetology (and/or Esthetician) classes. The assignment may include day, evening, and weekend responsibilities. This faculty position is represented by the Faculty Association Unit, AFT 6157.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach a 100% load in the field of Cosmetology (and/or Esthetician) classes.
  2. Lecture for Cosmetology and Esthetician programs concerning professional image; chemical waving and hair straightening; structure, disorders and diseases of the skin, hair and nails; cosmetic chemistry; bacteriology and
    sanitation; shampoo, rinses, scalp treatments, conditioners; hair coloring and hair lightening; hair shaping; hair styling; cosmetology rules and regulations; anatomy, electricity, history of hair styles; client communications; and salon management.
  3. Conduct laboratory classes for Cosmetology and Esthetician programs and demonstrate all areas of hair dressing, hair cutting, hair coloring, permanent
    weaving, chemical relaxing, facials, make-up, eye-brow arching, waxing, scalp and hair treatments, manicuring and pedicuring and shampoo. Administer quizzes, tests, mid-term and final examinations. Evaluate students' special projects/assignments.
  4. Conduct student performance evaluations, prepare and administer all exams including a practical mid-term and a practical final examination. Evaluate student oral presentations, projects, and written work using clear explicit
    criteria relevant to the course content and learning objectives.
  5. Supervise and direct instructional aides and students during customer client days. Responsibilities will also include the on-going supervision of instructional aides, planning and organizing instructional materials, coordinating personnel schedules.
  6. Currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility.
  7. Communicate subject matter clearly, correctly and effectively.
  8. Appropriate preparation and organizational skills in area of assignment.
  9. Foster a professional working environment.
  10. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings.
  11. Maintain students' files and records, conduct testing, evaluations and grading of student performances, advise and counsel students.
  12. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g., grades, census reports, rosters, textbook orders and requisitions.
  13. Fulfill collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, curriculum development, institutional committee assignments, advisory committees, student recruitment and retention, and participation in campus life activities.
  14. Participate in course schedule development and program reviews within the discipline.
  15. Use and develop a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods to engage student interest and support a variety of learning styles including the use of computers and information technology.
  16. Evaluate student oral presentations, projects, and written work using clear explicit criteria relevant to the course content and learning objectives.
  17. Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs and activities that would enhance the development of the department.
  18. Demonstrate an overall sensitivity to and understanding of diversity throughout the regular course of work.
  19. Participate in articulation and recruitment networking with high schools and transfer institutions.
  20. Continue professional development and remain up to date in field through course work, conferences, workshops, or other appropriate means.
  21. Direct the work of student help as assigned.
  22. Conduct required office hours.
  23. Demonstrate commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Any Bachelor's degree AND two years of experience directly related to the assignment OR Any Associate degree AND six years of experience directly related to the assignment OR the equivalent.
  2. Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may
    have experienced discrimination.
  3. Success integrating diversity as appropriate into the major duties outlined in the job description and in the duties listed in the District's hiring policy; or demonstrated equivalent transferable skills to do so.

Special Licenses, Certificates, etc.:       

Possession of Instructor of Cosmetology License issued by the State of California OR Proof of Cosmetology teacher training AND a valid Cosmetology License issued by State of California.  

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Esthetics License issued by State of California.
  2. Two years of college level teaching experience in Cosmetology.
  3. Five years of experience in Cosmetology industry.
  4. Basic computer skills including use of Office Suite applications.
