BUDGETS AND BUY-OUTS AND STIMULI - OH MY!!

President, Kim Schenk

Thank goodness I don't have to write the third "CCCAOE E-News 2008-2009" wondering about the budget! Last week after 45.5 hours of "lockdown," the State Senate, then the Assembly, finally approved a budget package the Governor would sign. After a week of gloom and doom, the sun came out. What a day in the northern part of the State! The budget includes fiscal years 2008-09 and 2009-10 and contains significant cuts and new taxes that impact every sector of education and government. Thanks to all of you who made efforts to "tell our story" and make personal connections with your legislators. The community college system has emerged "relatively" unscathed despite the horrific budget cuts due largely to the great work you do to serve our students and communities.

CCCAOE is now focusing our efforts on helping our legislators understand how to best support CTE and leverage our assets to train and re-train our current and future workforce. The Economic Recovery Act will provide opportunities for colleges to partner with the Workforce Investment Boards (WIB's). We have already begun to share effective practice techniques through regional meetings and collaborations, professional development events, and communication strategies.

While today is a good day, we know that significant fiscal challenges lie ahead. CCCAOE will continue to stay vigilant and mobilized; communicating directly with you and through the Regional Consortia networks so that we can continue to protect and enhance our ability to serve Californians.
