A Message from the President: STORY TIME!
President, Kim Schenk

We all recognize that the current economy and resulting dismal state budget necessitates difficult choices for our legislators. Education must be ready to sustain cuts that will inevitably impact students and programs. In readying ourselves, it is important that we make sure our legislators grasp the importance of CTE to keeping our state economy viable.

Visit, call, email or snail-mail your legislators NOW! Share your stories about current training programs that put people back to work. Highlight effective practices working with partners such as Workforce Investment Boards (WIBS), local non-profits and Adult Education. If there are discussions on your campus regarding reducing or eliminating CTE programs due to reduced funding, discuss the long-term impact of such decisions.

Email this information to Bobbie Edgin, CCCAOE Executive Secretary boedgin@cccaoe.org as well, so the Board can strategize effective communication and legislative solutions.

Finally, go to www.faccc.org and participate in the “Point and Click” letter-writing campaign regarding the: Special Session -- Budget Cuts. Make sure that our legislators understand the “on the ground” consequences that will impact student success and our ability to assist with economic recovery.

LOOKING BACK ON THE BAY: Fall Conference 2008
President Elect, Dick Bettendorf

The Fall 2008 conference set a new standard of excellence from beginning to end.

The pre-conference theme “Noncredit: Creating Pathways to Credit CTE” featured a panel of four experts from the field including Michelle Pilati, Rio Hondo College; Lynda Lee, Mira Costa College; Brian Ellison, San Diego CC Continuing Education; and Vicki Warner, CA Community College System Office. The Board will continue to keep an eye out for opportunities to bring timely pre-conference topics to you that work to enhance and illuminate the conference theme.

California EDGE Campaign
A CALIFORNIA UPDATE
Jason Weiner, Associate Director

During California's ongoing economic downturn and worsening budget crisis, investing in the education and skills training of our state's workforce is even more critical. Community colleges and other education providers are seeing enormous enrollment surges as hundreds of thousands of laid-off workers and others seek to increase their job skills. . And when the immediate crisis ends, California employers will desperately need more skilled workers at all levels in order to rebuild our competitiveness in the global economy.

WE WANT YOU TO LEAD?
Past President, Mollie Smith

It is election time in CCCAOE, and we need our future leaders to step up. This is an exciting time to be involved in CCCAOE leadership. Our decision to hire a legislative liaison in Sacramento has created new avenues and opportunities to impact CTE issues. There is much work to be done and need future leaders to fill the open positions.  Are you ready to lead?

There are five (5) positions open for 2009-2010:  . . . more
